PLAYLIST #2

Well, it's the second Thursday of October past the second Friday makes it the first to follow a Wednesday falling on the 13th this month as well as being the 41st Thursday this year with 5 Wednesdays in March & June making it a prime to medium depository for energy consortiums across the planet, so you know what that means... It's Playlist time!

This month's theme is brought to us from Jush-Onathan-Errick Wersdster in Paris, Ontario who requested I do a playlist comprised entirely of songs centered around the word "astronaut." The idea made me so mad I decided to do the opposite. So here it is, a playlist alternating from hip hop/rap (like speak singing) songs to my favourite ballads/epics from David Bowie. It's a best of Bowie featuring one of the many things he is best at mixed with some rap stuff I like.

LA SHARKS

I really love this band LA SHARK. Saw them back in May at Great Escape in Brighton and toured with them sort of when we played some dates with Josh Weller a while back in the U.K. Big tings, big tings.

P.S. check out Josh Weller's new song on the internet.

KENNY WEST

As if the whole world didn't already know:

I'm a little late to that party. Did you guys see that shit on the MVA's? I really like that girl on Monster. I miss the lady rappers in the spotlight. I had this idea a while back to release an album slowly over the course of a year or maybe several months by putting the songs for free online one at a time. I suppose it's not the most innovative idea but I realized it would work a lot better for an artist with more star power. I suppose those g.o.o.d. friday tracks might not be the new record but it's still a forward thinking idea for such a major selling dude.

SNOWMAN'S LAND

I'm in the movies everyone, it's official. I'm not sure if this has garnered much band press via our website/twitter/facedook/googleimagesearches but I worked on a score (and I use the term score loosely, no orchestras were involved) for a movie last summer that is being shown at select film festivals around the world now. It's called Snowman's Land and has a website here.

I can answer some questions I sense from the future now...

-I do not know where you can get the movie yet.
-It's a German movie written & directed by Tomasz Thomson.
-You can hear a snippet of some music I made playing in the background when you visit the website for the film but I'm not sure where you can locate more without going to see the movie. editor's note - you can in fact hear some of Luke's brilliant music under the videos section of the facebook page in clips 2 (ausschnitt eins), 3 (ausschnitt zwei) & 5 (kommt her ihr wichser)
-There is no imminent soundtrack release.
-My debut acting gig is slated for 2013 opposite Daryl Hannah in the sequel to Splash. This time it's me coming to turn her life topsy turvy! Plot twist - it's post apocalypse and mermaids rule the world! (Tom Hanks is expected to hear about the project and feign enthusiasm over his morning cigarette).
-No
-Yes
-Yes, but depending obviously.
-Every day.
-No
-No
-Hahahahahaha, you're so funny man...
-Yes
-Check the website for locations nearest you and go check it out!

PLAY-LIST

I've been absent for a while. Time flies when you're not blogging.

I've got some news:

First, in my down time, Forest City Lovers released their new album "Carraige" which I sing guest vocals on (track 6). Go seek it out via their website.

Second, the Acorn have completed compiling their remixes album. My remix for Crossed Wires will be on it showing off how much of a joker I am at remixing amoungst all the other brilliant tracks. Look out for a Young Rival remix coming up soon.

Lastly, here's a playlist I made. It's all over the place, some lengthy jams interspersed with some big pop gems. The key theme running throughout I suppose is they're all songs that manage to (sometimes unexpectedly) give me goosebumps - hence the title. Download it here. Also I've never shared anything on this blog so please let me know if there is trouble accessing the link.

Eat, Pray, Love, Luke

Seen And Not Seen

D.B.:
"He would see faces in movies, on TV, in magazines and in books. He thought that some of these faces might be right for him and that through the years, by keeping an ideal facial structure fixed in his mind, or somewhere in the back of his mind, that he might by force of will cause his face to approach those of his ideal. The change would be very subtle. It might take ten years or so. Gradually his face would change it's shape. A more hook nose. Wider, thinner lips. Beady eyes. A larger forehead.

He imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other people. They had also molded their faces according to some ideal. Maybe they imagined their new face would better suit their personality. Or maybe they imagined that their personality would be forced to change to fit the new appearance. This is why first impressions are often correct.

Although some people might have made mistakes. They may have arrived at an appearance that bears no relationship to them. They may have picked an ideal appearance based on some childish whim or momentary impulse.

Some have gotten half way there and then changed their minds. He wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake."

IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY HEARD IT...

They are in a bit of a transitioning period right now, but I'm always hoping to share their music with new people. I suppose this qualifies as "preaching to the choir" with all the hyping up of Nurses I do through myspace etc, but go listen if you haven't. Not trying to claim no one on earth has heard this band either, they are doing quite well and Apple's Acre received some glowing reviews.

Anyways... They sort of recently revisited Daytrotter. Sleeping / So Sweet being the new song and highlight of this session. Check it. And to read more articulate praise of Nurses read the lovely words Daytrotter wrote on the previously linked-to site.

They're on tour now through the U.S.A. and Canada with the Tallest Man On Earth. See them live, it might be a little while before they put out some new material.

IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY SEEN IT

This is the best music video I've seen in a dog's age, and it's a contender for weirdest video I have ever seen (Dance Floor Dale could take it).

REMIXES

Transition phase/remixes I've done over the past year and a half or so in reverse chronological order:

1. Ra Ra Riot - Winter '05
2. The Coast - All the Boys
3. Nancy - Keep Cooler

Go check them out on myspace.

Please head to these artists' respective web sites to hear more music from them.

In other news I have compiled a potential list for my forthcoming album. Far too soon, and completely meaningless to everyone aside from myself, I will write it down here. Making lists of songs comforts me, I can only imagine the feeling I'll get from posting this on the www.

RHYTHYMNALS 1st draft list of songs (in no particular or static order)

OF AGE
EVERYTHING'S BALLS
AMORES HALLARAS
THE CORNER
WHITE BILL BUCKINGHAM - THE MAN
INAMORATAOS
RHYTHYMNALS / TRIUMPHANCY
RUBY
A GREAT MAN
MY FRIEND ARCHIBALD [R.I.P.]

Apologies in advance to those few who are streaming my songs off myspace, and for the sudden removal of them. My goal is to create a record almost entirely separate from what I've built on the myspace. I hope you enjoy the few remixes I've done and I should be posting at least one more in the coming months from an artist yet to be announced.

Friday, February 5, 2010

So I can't say much about my new record. I know I get a lot of hits on here (I have almost 18 followers) and though I'm still not entirely sure how this website works (I think it might take another 3 or 4 months to get the ropes) I'm pretty sure it's a mega center for hype and gossip. I overheard some people talking about it recently and how cool it is. They mentioned the internet a bunch and I think they were likely referring to this site and more specifically my blog.

So I will say I have become a control freak about the entire thing, but I am very excited about the people who are going to help me work on this record.

Some vocal appearances by:

Lula Ballon
Derrick Wersdster
Jonathan Derrick-Wersdster (coincidence - no relation)

Also additional instrumentation and engineered by someone.

Thom Yorke is slated to hear about it from a friend and make a gesture with his neck and head to suggest mild interest.

That's all.

Sincerely,

-ll

Getting Real

So here I am, doing stuff and not writing about it. If this is a place to talk about things you do then allow me to begin.

First off, Caribou has a new record out in April. It's my favourite Caribou record thus far and I'm thrilled to say I'm a part of it. I sing the last song. You can listen to the first BANGIN' single called "Odessa" here. It's fucking awesome.

What else, what else, what else... FOUR TET has a new album out (now I think). I also qualify it as being "fucking awesome" and you can quote me on that. Go get your mits on it, find a quiet place, put on a nice pair of headphones and listen the shit out of it.

What else can I swear about. Fuckin' Novels is up for free fucking download now. The song I did is called "Big Run" & I liked the title so much I named this here blog after it.

I'm working on a new record all of my own still. I'm still writing but hope to plan some actual recording time soon before I get really busy doing Born Ruffians things. The record is tentatively titled Rhythymnals, a word I'm fairly certain I made up, but may have already been made up by someone else without me knowing. If so, I apologize for stating I made it up just then.
