It's weird when one of the largest television events in the world puts on some Comedy at Club 54 caliber shit. Who gave the green light for this to open the show? I guess I don't expect the world of the VMAs, it's not like they are the benchmark of entertainment but this would have fit in well at my high school's talent show, and I went to a public high school. This, I'm pretty certain, is one of Michael Scott's improv characters. I squirmed in my seat trying to watch this. Somebody, pull in the reins.

Still Strokin' It

This past July I had the opportunity to see the Strokes play for the third time in my life. It was in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and the set consisted entirely of their back catalogue, no hints at any of the new material. What I saw on stage though was promising, they seemed to be having fun and, more importantly, they sounded better than ever. I met Julian after the show, suppressing fan-boy urges I tried my darnedest to play it cool and told him earnestly that I eagerly awaited the release of their next record. The "conversation" went something, if not exactly, like this. Oh and I should tell you first that we were waiting in line for toilets, he went into a locked V.I.P. porto-potty and I caught him on the way out. I should also add that he was very pleasant and happy to talk to me...

LL: Hey that was great.

JC: Thanks.

LL: Yeah it sounded great. You guys looked and sounded like you were really having fun.

JC: I'm glad you believed the illusion.

LL: ...

JC: I have this key to the porto john, I don't know who to give it to though.

LL: Oh that's okay I'll just wait for the regular one, I don't know if I can do a V.I.Pee pee.

JC: ...

LL: Nice meeting you man, have a good night.

I have to admit when they finally flung the first taste of new material our way with "Under Cover of Darkness" I was disappointed. A band I've loved since I was 16, I hung on their every word and bended string, but what I heard was a watered down, vacant, sterile Strokes. I subsequently lowered my standards for the rest of Angles.

Skip ahead a few weeks to this evening as I lay in bed searching the internet for any leaked copies (don't steal music - I will certainly be buying a copy of the LP next week when it is officially released). Well let's just say I wasn't laying very long. I was absolutely delighted. I heard a band embracing everything they'd hinted at over the past ten years. Welcoming slick rock sounds with strong leanings on 80s fun. I heard Queen, I heard the Cars, I heard Tom Petty and Blondie and I heard something entirely new. This is a fun, rejuvenated and ambitious Strokes. They're using synths. They're doubling, tripling, even quadrupling vocals. Julian is experimenting and pushing the boundaries of the music even further at times than he did with his solo effort (which I enjoyed) but one thing is for sure: these guys function best when they're all together.

Anyways, I hate record reviews and I didn't want to write one. I just wanted to gush a bit about one of my favourite bands releasing something new that I am genuinely excited to listen to over and over and over again.

This month's theme is brought to us from Jush-Onathan-Errick Wersdster in Paris, Ontario who requested I do a playlist comprised entirely of songs centered around the word "astronaut." The idea made me so mad I decided to do the opposite. So here it is, a playlist alternating from hip hop/rap (like speak singing) songs to my favourite ballads/epics from David Bowie. It's a best of Bowie featuring one of the many things he is best at mixed with some rap stuff I like.

I'm a little late to that party. Did you guys see that shit on the MVA's? I really like that girl on Monster. I miss the lady rappers in the spotlight. I had this idea a while back to release an album slowly over the course of a year or maybe several months by putting the songs for free online one at a time. I suppose it's not the most innovative idea but I realized it would work a lot better for an artist with more star power. I suppose those g.o.o.d. friday tracks might not be the new record but it's still a forward thinking idea for such a major selling dude.

SNOWMAN'S LAND

I'm in the movies everyone, it's official. I'm not sure if this has garnered much band press via our website/twitter/facedook/googleimagesearches but I worked on a score (and I use the term score loosely, no orchestras were involved) for a movie last summer that is being shown at select film festivals around the world now. It's called Snowman's Land and has a website here.

I can answer some questions I sense from the future now...

-I do not know where you can get the movie yet.

-It's a German movie written & directed by Tomasz Thomson.

-You can hear a snippet of some music I made playing in the background when you visit the website for the film but I'm not sure where you can locate more without going to see the movie. editor's note - you can in fact hear some of Luke's brilliant music under the videos section of the facebook page in clips 2 (ausschnitt eins), 3 (ausschnitt zwei) & 5 (kommt her ihr wichser)

-There is no imminent soundtrack release.

-My debut acting gig is slated for 2013 opposite Daryl Hannah in the sequel to Splash. This time it's me coming to turn her life topsy turvy! Plot twist - it's post apocalypse and mermaids rule the world! (Tom Hanks is expected to hear about the project and feign enthusiasm over his morning cigarette).

I've got some news:

First, in my down time, Forest City Lovers released their new album "Carraige" which I sing guest vocals on (track 6). Go seek it out via their website.

Second, the Acorn have completed compiling their remixes album. My remix for Crossed Wires will be on it showing off how much of a joker I am at remixing amoungst all the other brilliant tracks. Look out for a Young Rival remix coming up soon.

Lastly, here's a playlist I made. It's all over the place, some lengthy jams interspersed with some big pop gems. The key theme running throughout I suppose is they're all songs that manage to (sometimes unexpectedly) give me goosebumps - hence the title. Download it here.
